Firedwarves

In my experience if one dwarf happens to catch on fire, all of them will soon catch on fire. But fear not!
If something catches on fire, the special branch of the military rushes in with their buckets of water or sand to put out the blaze, be it burning clothes, workshops, or dwarves. Of course they could also dump water on attacking fire baddies to put them out or slow them down.
Also the dwarves intelligence should be expanded to "Thou shalt not pick up burning items or dwarves." I'm sure this has been done and will come live in the new version. I should read the bloats.

As far as I know, dwarves will avoid burning items in the upcoming update. As for firedwarves, I think I suggested that once as an additional function of the fortress guard. Instead of being a dumping place for cripples, they'd be a firewatch, patrolling the fortress to look for active and potential fires. When a fire erupted, they'd sound the alarm and run for buckets. As good community minded dwarves, the other dwarves would of course assist, but first and foremost it'd be the firewatch on the job.

I can also imagine a fire-scarred old legendary firefighter going around and teaching the dwarven children fire safety, while dressed up as a bear.

I have a little anti-fire plan for next version, since my dwarves will undoubtedly catch on fire one way or another during my weird-assed experiments. It's an experiment of it's own, but I have no doubt it'll have interesting results.

Well toady seems to be adding lots of new features to pressure plates, so I say we just get him to add a new one - 'dwarf on fire'.

When the plate detects a flaming dwarf, you can have it lock the doors and open the floodgates to put him out. once he is no longer on fire, the gate closes and the doors open.

station a few of these babies around your fort and problem solved!

I don't think a fire-detecting trigger would be all that useful. At best it's just a stop-gap measure til we get real ways to deal with fire and/or the dwarves actually know about it. Besides that, I have trouble imagining a medieval-style sprinkler system, but maybe that's just me.  :)

I had this exact same idea.  The Fortress Guard doesn't really have much to do besides beat prisoners, so I think they should act as a kind of fire brigade when necessary.  When there's a fire, they grab the nearest bucket, fill it up, and rush off to douse the fire.

Of course normal dwarves probably should do a few things to combat fire as well.  I mean, a burning dwarf would probably jump in the river even if it means risking drowning.

Thats awesome.

And since the fortress guard is so great at beating dwarves, and since fires can be put out by beating them, they should just be made to beat burning dwarves and presto! problem solved.

I just searched firedwarves and didn't find anything, so I missed that post. It was worth it though, just because of what mickel said.
