Caverns collapsing?
« on: April 24, 2010, 02:52:25 am »

As soon as i embarked on site the caverns that i cant yet see started collapsing.  i have 30x announcements of them collapsing and that would be just fine accept that it pauses the game and zooms me underground to see nothingness every few seconds.. is there anything i can do about this?

Hi!

The collapsing caverns are a bug with no workaround. However, you do not have to put up with the recentering.
Exit the game.
In the subdirectory data/init, there is the file announcements.txt which controls what the game does when certain events are to be announced.

There should be this line, or something similar, which controls the announcements for the collapse.

Quote
[CAVE_COLLAPSE:A_D:D_D:P:R]

Remove the :P:R part so that you get

Quote
[CAVE_COLLAPSE:A_D:D_D]

This should theoretically turn off the pause (P) and the recentering (R).

Save the changed announcements.txt file and start the game. The changes should take effect immediately, allowing you to start your game. Once the cavern has become stable, I recommend that you change the announcement back (again, you have to exit the game once to have it take effect), as cave collapse is usually something you want to check immediately to see if there is anyone you need to save/rescue.

All changes to files in the data/init subdirectory take effect the next time you load the program. So no regenning or anything is needed.

AFAIK the collapsing caverns are not a bug, per say, but instead are the result of underground lakes pouring into the magma layer. The resulting obsidian falling is what is causing the "cave-ins." See this thread, wherein I explore this phenomenon: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=55142.0

Something (Probably parts of the clown fortress) is probably being genned floating for some reason and it happens to collapse when you strike the earth.
