Why am I suddenly thinking that the dwarves will eventually suffer from PTSD?

I think if anything, the game'll end up afflicted with gangrene.

The dwarves already get PTSD in the form of the thousand-yard stare they get from seeing the horrors of war, but this just makes things like death bother them less ("getting used to tragedy" "doesn't really care about anything anymore", etc).  There's a note in a req somewhere to make negative mental effects.

It would be nice to put this in the orders/rules menu. Then you could customise the way your soldiers train. You could give them orders to get iron weapon when on duty and any other weapon if that is not available. And to only use wooden weapons when standing ground and if that is not available fight unarmed. Or if your a sadist you can order your dwarfes fighting with good quality obsidian. LOL. this would be very useful!

Why do something like that when you can just forbid the items in the stockpile? Then all you have to do is reclaim them when you need them. It's much easier and faster.

I do not mean to be a dick about this.
But I would like to point out that not only is this a very frequent suggestion, this particular thread is also nearly a year and a half old. The search feature could have pointed to a more recent and relevant thread to resurrect for continuing the discussion, if indeed there is anything to add.

I still think it would be best if dwarves just plain refused to train with real weapons.

It would work just like metal versus non-metal crossbow bolts at the archery range.  If "training-quality" weapons are available, dwarves take them to the barracks and spar.  If not, they don't spar.

But most everyone else's ideas are good too; whatever works is better than having to fiddle with stockpiles and forbid orders and traps just to steer the training weapons into the hands of the trainees.

I always wondered why there weren't wooden sparring dummies.  Sure, they might not be as good as practicing with another being, but they will at least help you point that spear in the right direction.
