Future Game Programmer
« on: October 06, 2010, 11:02:29 pm »

I am 2 months out from graduating from Fullsail, a university focusing on developing video games. I have been following this game shortly after starting here. Of all the many games I have played or seen this is without a doubt the most impressive and creative work so far. I keep thinking of what company I want to work for and feel sad that I cannot find any one making something of this caliber anywhere else. If anyone knows of a company that is planning to build a god game such as this one in 3D please let me know.

Well. There is this.

Not very dwarf fortress at first glance. But it has magma. And water. And terrain modifying go(o)dness.

Edit: Oh and dont mind that blurb down at the bottom. Neoseekers got bad info. It's coming to PC.

Problem is probably that DF's a game that isn't going to be finished till spring starts in October. Most companies plan to make money after they finished their game by selling it or the finished engine. That doesn't work too well for a game like this, so you're either looking for a non-profit organization, a developer with way to much cash at hand (Blizzard or the guys that developed Duke Nukem Forever) or a developer that has a plan for making money of off a game that's going to be in development for the better part of their employees lifetime.

Yes, this is an unfortunate truth. I can't wait till a developer interested in making a modern version of this style of game comes froward. I will be joining them that day (if I can support my family while making it).

Due to the way publishers mitigate risk there is a good chance any developer making such a game will be a small indie team or working solo, that said the chance of them hiring someone just out of uni is pretty unlikely. I'm sorry if that sounds negative :/

Joining an open source project to show what you can do might be a good way to get the kind of attention and reputation you'd need. The minecraft guy is/was hiring people as well, although I have no idea on his selection process.

Yeah, sadly, you'd have to work your way up. You should probably take whatever jobs you can find at first, then when people recognize your skills, you'd get a better chance at a bigger company.
