A Question About Quality
« on: April 04, 2010, 02:21:20 pm »

Something has been confusing me for a while now... while looking at the quality of an item, it sometimes shows two different symbols, one outside the double parentheses and one inside them. What does it mean? For example, is one with two exceptional symbols inside and outside better than one with just one pair?

So, I tediously awaited the arrival of the dwarven caravan (I'm set up on a island, see)... And, they came. My fingers tingled, my nose twitched and my toes tickled... they came around the corner, over my bridge... Into my courtyard... Onto my trade depot...

Then everything near it exploded in a cloud of blood.

The inner one is the quality of the item, the outer one is the quality of decorations.
While the first one increases cost AND stats of the item (armor value, damage etc.), the outer one (decoration) only increases the cost.

Oh... wow, I feel stupid, that means I've bought weapons before that were terribly made but were just really shiny.

I think we've all done that IRL.

I still like exceptionally decorated items for two reasons. 1) Aesthetics, it's just much funnier to play DF while trying to experience an immersion :P; 2) happy thoughts dwarves get for acquiring/looking at such item.

Well, I didn't have any qualms about nicely decorated items in fortress mode, it's buying that shiny new longsword in adventure mode while it was actually utter garbage.
