Shaded tileset/graphics backgrounds?

In my old DF version (maygreen/mayday), I had colored backgrounds for all my tiles instead of black. In new DF, with a mayday version, I have set the colors to be mayday-ized, but the backgrounds are still black beneath the symbols. Any thoughts on how to change this?

I want to look like the top pic. I currently look like the middle pic, altered from the bot pic which is the new version mayday file I have.

You need to use a different mayday font. Copy the mayday.png over from your old DF folder and convert it to .bmp. replace the maydayMIX or maydayMAX.bmp line in your data/init/init.txt under graphics:yes with mayday.bmp.

You would have to use a .png. But you can't until the d# stuff gets merged. For now you're just going to have to suck it up.

Incidentally, I'm rather surprised to learn that this look is apparently fairly popular. I always found it to be muddy and not really aesthetically pleasing, even apart from the way it messes up text.

So, basically I have to wait till bugs are sorted out/mayday can get a version out? Ah well.

So, has there been any progress on this matter in the latest versions of DF or maygreen? My attempts are still met with failure. Also could someone please explain the significance of d#, and/or the .dll files in some versions of the mayday tileset?

The d# version was a rework of the display functions to use opengl and supported .png files with alpha transparency.  Toady has not merged this functionality into the new version yet, and I am sure there will be an announcement when it is completed.

My tileset is not based on mayday's tileset, but it's still pretty similar to what you are looking for:
