Miners: The New Dwarven Army!
« on: April 15, 2010, 07:39:37 pm »

The new combat system allows one to assign specific weapons to specific fighters, which means that giving legendary miners picks for combat is easier than ever!  Just draft every miner into the military, but leave them unactivated.  They'll soon forget the draft, and will be ready to activate at a moment's notice!  Now, train EVERY dwarf in mining...

Dwarven economics are still in the experimental stages. The humans have told them that they need to throw a lot of money around to get things going, but every time the dwarves try all they just end up with a bunch of coins lying all over the place.

Tried this approach.
Due to stuck-in-training bug i have 5 legendary miners doing nothing anymore.

Me too. Apparently the miner's guild has organized work action.

You missed the part about never activating them. Never set them to train.

As long as you leave them inactive, they will continue working as normal. If a monster comes you use the squad menu to direct them to destroy it. You can station them in a spot or kill something, but don't direct them to train.

I've been doing this with a ragtag group of migrants that came with military skills, and haven't had any problems with it. I haven't set up a squad of miners though, but I definitely should. There's definitely enough stuff to mine, and I know my current military got their asses handed to them by a goblin ambush. Despite their steel weapons and steel/leather armor -- I lost 11, gobbos lost 3  :'(. At least one of my military guys was able to stay up long enough for the bowmen to empty their quivers into him. He didn't have much of a body left afterward, but it sure made the second squad's job easier.

I didn't activate them, i just assigned barracks for their squad, and they went in individual training.
I believe i was doing it to force them wear armour and pick their picks.

Assigning the barracks is what seems to trigger the training bug, I had the same thing happen to me once I set one up. So basically just don't build a barracks. Or keep a couple miners out of the military entirely; training miners will actually train mining skill practicing with their picks.
