Ethnocentrism cannot possibly be a good thing, since it doesn't correspond to my beliefs.

You are right. Ethnocentrism, by definition, is the belief that your value system is the best. Which means that you can, indeed, be ethnocentric no matter where you are from.

eth·no·cen·trism  (thn-sntrzm)
n.
1. Belief in the superiority of one's own ethnic group.
2. Overriding concern with race.

Polish center in Cambridge still full of candles.

This is especially sad since I was reading an article the day before from the Polish ambassador to France saying about how there would be a new golden age for Poland.

No, sir, my definition of ethnocentrism is definitely correct, and yours is inferior and unsound.

...this joke is dead by this point.

Yeah, so some people decided to bury our late president in a place traditionally reserved for Polish kings and (whatever that may be)heroes.
Friday evening everyone thought it ok to make low-brow jokes about Mr.Kaczyński, as he was, let's say, controversial, and thus an easy target.
Come Saturday and all of a sudden he's a national hero? Damnit, the tragedy of losing so many high-ranking officials needs to be recognized, yes, but let's not make one of them, hardly liked when alive, into some kind of saint.

I wish I knew how did the Macedonians react in 2004 when their president died in a plane crash. Somehow I don't think there was that much fuss around it.

I was under the impression that this wasn't even a popular president.

I guess you either die a hero or live to see yourself become the villain.
