Now that we have Caverns - why avoid Cave adaptation?
« on: April 17, 2010, 07:52:09 am »

Title pretty much sums it up. I was thinking that as the cavern environment is essentially like an underground version of the outside world surely you could set up everything down there, order your dorfs to stay inside and never go up to the surface again? The caverns have enough renewable resources to keep a fort running almost indefinitely so why bother with the surface world? Cave adaptation is only a problem if you want to use the surface but if you don't need anything up there why bother preventing it?

Thoughts?

Did we make an effort to avoid it when there were no caverns?

Yeah, I've never bothered about it. Why did you think that anyone tries to avoid it?

I always installed skylights over my central stairways, but that was primarily just so my military wouldn't be puking their guts out while trying to fight.

I tended to have a meeting hall with a skylight, so I could avoid the River Of Puke effect outside of my fort's entrance the first few years.... Now? Forget it.

I haven't had any cave adaptation in DF2010. Does it even exist anymore? I miss the old days when my king's throne room glass dome was covered in vomit from sick masons.

I've absolutely seen dwarves with "nauseated by sunlight" unhappiness in the new version.  Not sure if they throw up though, I haven't seen that.
