Playing DF with very high res monitor
« on: July 04, 2010, 09:42:35 am »

Since the last time I got into DF I have purchased a 27 inch, 2560x1440 monitor.  I like to run DF in a window, and even at 800x600 I could fit 6 DF windows on my monitor with room to spare.  Unfortunately the window is too small to see the game clearly.

Is there any way I can perhaps 'stretch' the game window to just blow up everything to double size?

yep, you can set different resolutions in your init file, where you select the font size you can change the WINDOWEDX and WINDOWEDY values.  This will make the window bigger, then down below that you can change the GRID:0:0 values to give you more tiles in that window.  To get your grid numbers divide your X and Y values by the pixel width and height of the tile set you use.

Or, you can maximize the window, either by dragging the corner or with the button.

If the tiles are too small to see clearly, there are likely plenty of larger tilesets to choose from.

Mousewheel zoom makes the tiles look kinda crummy. Whether you zoom in or out it blurs them. (At least it does using Mayday.)

If you want to avoid blurring, try changing the filtering from "linear" to "nearest" in init.

I might have to try that. Being able to zoom in and out would be very useful sometimes.

You could get a larger tileset, like Ironhand's or Phoebus' graphics set. THose are 16x16 and you could have large game windows of those easy.

I suggest you don't think too much what you build and where. When ever you need something, build it as close as possible to where you need it. that way your fortress will eventually become epic

Are you using the latest version of the game? I'm running at that resolution using Ironhand's tileset. Just open the game and maximise the window and it runs perfectly. I don't understand how you're stuck at 800x600 unless you've downloaded some version of the game that's locked into a low resolution for some reason.

it depends on if you're running the legacy version or the SDL version

There's the answer then. Stop using the legacy version.

There's a reason the legacy version is still up for download; there are likely still a small handful of outstanding issues with the SDL/OpenGL code.
