I'd like to see some improvements in the bug tracker system. It's hard to tell that the bug you discovered is a duplicate :(

Do you mean it's hard to search for existing reports, or it's hard to find reports you submitted that got marked as duplicates?

I am pretty sure he means it is difficult to find out of a given bug has already been reported.  It is probably a matter of not knowing how to use the search options effectively.  Personally, I am very happy with the search features available on the bug tracker.  If I don't find something close to what I am seeing in three or four searches then it probably isn't on there.

Yes I meant it was difficult to find out if a given bug was already reported, and it's not a matter of the search options used effectively. Different ways of describing things make a great deal of difference in reporting things. Then the self-editing features are limited, relying on administrators to organize the setup, which only works after the bug reports have slowed down, which reduce the amount of duplicate bugs anyway because most have already been identified at that time.

I just don't like the system. It's better than nothing though. I'd still like to see it improved.

Consider me a dabbling bug reporter. I'd agree with some that the bug tracker's not the greatest in terms of user friendliness, but it beats the hell out of a forum based reporting system.

Biggest plus: seeing Toady strike down another item for the upcoming release.

Is it just me, or does reading through the bugtracker and seeing just how many bugs there are sadden you on the inside as much as it does me?

I'm aware that a majority of them are duplicates, but still... saddening.
Speaking from a software development point of view, having more issues in your issue tracker is GOOD.  There is no such thing as bug-free software; and the more bugs you isolate and have in your tracker, the longer your project history, the more bugs that have been squashed, and the better the quality of your software.

For example, some software (less than a month old) I'm working on in my company now has over 3000 internally reported issues.  Because we have a "Everything is a bug" mindset, we even have bugs listed as "User interface misspelling" or "Merge branch to main." Also, since we use automated testing, if any of these bugs crop back up again, we will probably know almost immediately.

If anything, I expect the bug tracker to improve the ability of ToadyOne to figure out and fix bugs, especially the weird little inanities that are hard to pin down.  I do think that if he were to learn unit testing, it would help even more, but I can understand if that does not happen.

TLDR: The larger the number of reported bugs, the more likely it is to be good software.
