How I Had Fun in 2010 (Spoilers)
« on: April 13, 2010, 01:44:11 pm »

Tell how your fortresses finally kicked it. As I'm a dirty mac user and have only played for an hour or two on a school comp, I don't have much, but I guess I'll go first anyway.

Dug down 1-40 z-levels with only a miner change to avoid the caverns, made a beeline for the good stuff, and promptly got slaughtered by monstrosities made out of fire, snow and salt.

Actually, salt demons sound pretty cool.

What do you really need to turn Elves into Dwarves? Mutation could make them grow a beard; insanity effects could make them evil-minded, aggressive, tree-hating cave dwellers, and instant, full necrosis of their lower legs could make them short.

I purposely set out in a scorching desert while at war with goblins next to a goblin fortress, with titan attacks set at pop 10 and 1000 types of demons.  built my fort and then

. walling myself in, I watched as they slaughtered my migrants and caravans and I dug to a cavern where I had to fight off nearly 20 cave blobs.  I used the people who weren't working to smooth and engrave every inch of the fort, giving each dorf a gem window and master craft items (only had 15 dorfs), so when they all dehydrated (desert and all, not enough food production to produce enough booze) they died the happiest dwarfs of any fort I have ever had (not very much of an accomplishment, to be honest).
so far, attempts at recapturing have been in vain.
that was my fun :D

After massive experimentation with the military system, I figured out how to make it so that all my migrants are immedietly forced into the military and marched down into several caverns I found. From there they are walled in and have food and drink periodically dropped down by my starting seven (only when I have extra and when I think about it  ;D)

From there on I drop in a few poor quality iron weapons and watch as my barely trained migrates attempt to defend themselves in the wild caverns.

Out of every batch of migrants whom ever is last standing is allowed to reenter my main fort. If everyone is dead or immoble then they have all FAILED and I await for my next batch of sheep to the slaughter.

A forgotten beast emerged out of my cavern, it was a huge pillar of fire that sprayed poison gas and was covered in a shell. It descended out of an underwater lake, and vaporized the rushing water as it creeped forward like it was Moses parting the Red Sea. My dwarves pulled off its shell and brought its body down to red health, but it had no other body parts so it rampaged through my fortress and lit everything on fire. Nothing could stop it, nothing  :'(

First note that I like to put important people's rooms deep in my fortress so they're a bit safer from outside attacks. I told my miners to channel out the ground to make a high ceiling for my favorite starting dwarf's huge room. I designated the area quite carelessly because channeling makes downward ramps now which I've learned is generally safe.

The game announced that I had found a cavern. Because this was the first time I had found a cavern in the new underground I got excited and failed to check out how I found it. A minute later I got a cave-in message and announcements telling me that three of my miners are dead. Apparently, the area I told them to channel out happened to be the ceiling of the cavern I had found. Since there was no ground below the channeled level it actually made channels instead of ramps. Being dwarves, they channeled out the ground such that about 1/3 of the designated area fell to into the cavern. Three of my four miners fell 5 z-levels to the bottom with the ceiling.

I used my last miner to dig a path to the bottom of the cave so I could retrieve my picks. I was contemplating what I should do about the cavern when I was informed that my last miner had his legs ripped off and died. A giant cave spider found his way from the cavern into my fort. At this point I had 6 living dwarves, no armor and a single axe for a weapon. I admitted defeated and watched the spider kill most of my dwarves. I say most because my last dwarf, a farmer who was outside at the time, was attacked by a Sasquatch and died from blood loss before the spider got to him. I kinda wish I could have keep watching to see if the spider and the Sasquatch met. in any case, my first serious fort in the new version crumbled beautifully.

Hey, I'm cool with you tying a dog up and shooting it with a ballista if you're short on elves, but there's not need to lie about it to us.
