Can you make mud if you put water onto a stone layer, or does it only work if you put it onto a sand layer?

Stone works fine, though this should probably have gone in the questions section.

In any case, be aware that you seem to need "pile of mud" to successfully farm; I've had no luck trying to build a farm over dustings or small piles.
