I've been wondering about this for a couple of weeks. I know at least in the last version that every once in awhile you would end up with a world sans a dwarf civ, how would one go about doing so in DF2010? I'm talking last dwarf group in the world, trying to get by with nothing but paranoia, lava and copious amounts of pointless engraving. A saved world with such a scenario, or the knowledge to generate it would be cool.

I want to make a fortress where there is a real reason for all the traps and goblin raids, there is no other dwarf fort to hit.

One possible way to force this would be mod the dwarfs so that they're pretty weak while you gen the world, then when you (hopefully) get a world sans dwarfs, mod them back to normal. YMMV however as I've not tried it.

could you make a pocket world with a single civ, and turn off "playable civ required"
maybe that would work

Nah, just increase the titan number a lot and leave worldgen running for at least 2000 years. Always works for me, though this might also kill most of the other races.
