31 way slower?
« on: April 09, 2010, 02:01:31 pm »

Wondering if it's just me. On a 4x4 embark, I get about 30 fps on my desktop to start, versus an average of 100 in 40d on a 6x6 embark.

It's because it's tracking 150 z-levels full of water and critters instead of 30 full of stone.

Edit: creating a new world with Cavern Layer Number = 1 will significantly reduce the depth of your map, thus the amount of water and critters.

Yeah, I dug into some caverns already. I would be happy to have ones that are about 1/10th as deep. What exactly does Cavern Layer Number = 1 do?

It reduces the number of caverns that you find.

On the default settings (cavern layer number = 3) a rough cross section of the map would be
Sky - Surface - Soil - Stone - Cavern #1 - Stone - Cavern #2 - Stone - Cavern #3 - Stone - Bottom

With cavern layer number = 1 you get:
Sky - Surface - Soil - Stone - Cavern #1 - Stone - Bottom

Will bottom still contain magma?

Yes, as long as the parameters Magma Layer or Bottom Layer are set to "yes" you will have magma at the bottom of the map.

Do you really lose anything specific on going for fewer caverns?

(a simple yes or no will do since that's just asking for spoilers)

Less "Chance" at certain matters can count as a 'yes' so long as there's a chance.

(so far, all I know about are that caverns show up and the sight of the magma

I believe there are certain things that only show up in the lower cavern levels, but I've not yet dug that far.

If you disable caverns then you're basically looking at 40d with magma at the bottom.

There's nothing in the caverns that's a unique experience in the sense that you can't find a direct analogue on the surface, like you'd miss out on underground trees, but there's trees on the surface, but it is a different sort of challenge because of how it informs and alters the design of your Fort.

I think you would never encounter any flora or creatures from a deeper level (2 or 3), I have no confirmation though.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.
