In our fort, before it died, I just bred war elephants for food, defense, and profit. 206 meat from a single butchered elephant guaranteed food at any time.

Farms were for drinking only.

This just highlights why it's so useful to embark with lots of animals instead of a ton of meat now.  Dogs can be butchered into about 10 units of food overall by even a competent butcher, and cost about 4 less overall points per animal than bringing along the equivalent amount of meat (along with the benefit of producing more meat for you in the form of their offspring).  Bring a cow and a bull along at embark, and as long as they survive to produce offspring (and as long as you don't get axe-crazy and butcher all of said offspring), your meat problems will be over (though that's a pretty expensive route to go).

Isn't it just wonderful that DF now encourages us to bring along live animals for food instead of prepared meats?  So much more Dwarvenly to bring dinner along for the ride.
