Capturing and breeding whales?
« on: April 06, 2010, 01:33:54 pm »

After butchering a washed up whale corpse, I felt inspired to breed these animals in captivity for their abundant meat and bones.  Is breeding aquatic animals possible/practical?  Any advice or reference sources welcomed.

It's very possible. You need to capture them in cage traps, first. They will not suffocate while in cages. Next you need to tame them. Make sure the kennel is in 3/7 water so your training Dwarf won't drown but the Whale can survive, too. Voilą.

I would argue that you don't need to tame them to breed them in captivity for meat and bones, and it might even be more convenient to leave them wild.  Wild animals can be butchered after they die from any cause, while tame animals can only be butchered after being taken to the butcher's shop and deliberately slaughtered.  Taking an aquatic animal to the butcher's shop without it air-drowning along the way might be difficult.

Does the game differentiate between salt water and fresh water for whales to survive in?

Currently, it does not matter whether salt or clean water will kill aquatic animals.

as long as there's water, they'll live

Have the processing infrastructure right next to the exit from the Whale Kennel. They shouldn't drown so quickly when they only spend a few steps out of water.

Would a butcher shop built on dry land and later flooded with 3/7 water still function?

Would the dwarfs refuse to use it?

no, thats the only way to make a butchers shop in water.
they should be able to function in 3/7, if not, just train your butchers up a little in swimming. (by of course attempting to drown them dozens of times)

I've installed a dwarven jacuzzi for my fortress's new meeting place.  My dwarfs are learning how to swim as I type this...

I had them stand in the surf before, but the swimming skill doesn't seem to go past dabbling for whatever reason.

Dwarves only get swimming experience from MOVING in water.
