symbiotic relations

I hate cats. they kill tons of critters I have to manually dump all the time because dwarves are lazy. Just like real cats they just like to kill things, not necessarily eat them. Dogs don't do much but mill around tell something hostile pops up. Dogs are known for devouring a lot of foul things. Dogs should gobble up anything the cats kill. So a good mix of dogs and cats wont be just a source of food and annoyance.
There could be other relations like goats should gobble up old clothing once dwarves figure out how to change themselves. Not that they cant be dumped but as a time saver.

Good idea, except for those hard to digest metal parts...
Perhaps a gelatinous cube? A somewhat semi-automatic, portable garbage eating pet?

Is that a Nethack reference or did Nethack take it from somewhere else in turn?

My stray dogs often chase fire imps back into the magma pipe and then continue fighting while burning and drowning in the lava. Truly their loyalty knows no bounds, but perhaps it should.

NetHack stole the Gelatinous Cube from Dungeons & Dragons (among other things).

Dogs used to be kept around the feast hall to run around the floor cleaning up whatever was spilled/dropped.  My own dogs tend to eat anything on the floor or on low tables, so it makes perfect sense to me that dogs would eat whatever dead vermin might be around.

Stick a mimic in it and it's a perfect creation (Gelatinous cubes can't eat metal, mimics on the other hand LOVE it).

Be warry wandering the corridors when you see a floating chest.  Do not send the rogue in to loot the chest.
