I assume this is a bug.

I build a restraint, assign an animal to it, removed the chain (not the animal), the animal walks freely with the rope/chain attached to its upper body.

Workaround to get rope/chain back is to view the rope on the animal and dump it.

edit: sorry, wrong subforum. Can a mod move this to the appropriate one please?

This happened to me in 40d as well, so it's definitely not new to DF2010.

I could never get that stupid dog to come back with my rope either.  Perhaps try forbidding it or dumping it from the stocks screen.

Really? I don't seem to recall this bug in 40d... then again I must've had tons of rope back then I never noticed. Only reason I noticed this now was because I only had 2 ropes in my stock.

I remember being annoyed that the game was awesome enough to realize that the chain was attached to the dog still, but no longer to the ground, and so the dog was free to move around and play keep away.

Actually I think the Dwarf AI just thought it was a piece of clothing for the dog, but still, it was lowercase-f fun.

Mark it for dumping and a dwarf will come get it.
To avoid this, you can un-assign the animal from the restraint prior to destroying the restraint. The animal will be removed with no chain around its neck by a dwarf, leaving the restraint with no animals on it, free to be removed.
