Biome connections - blur the edges

Current biome distinction in the game is very sharp. If you have a river, which is half in warm/cold, half in freezing climate, the river will freeze on one half of the map, and will be running on the other half of it.

It does not form a cap of ice on the top (which is usually the case in reality) but fully freezes, and the warmer biome river is as usual.

I would like to suggest to blur the edges of the biomes, allowing a mix of the two happen. In this case it would be either :

1) river freezes during one year, but does not freeze during another year
2) river only has a walkable cap of ice, but is still running below
3) river has patches of frozen ice mixed with running water.

All of that should also be applicable to other biome differences, where it makes sence that a mix can happen. Of course such cases as trees not being able to grow on stone is an obvious no-no.
