Automatic Quantum Stockpiler
« on: April 11, 2010, 02:07:39 am »

I made a device to pile infinite items onto one square using water to push the items around, and I used it to dispose of vermin remains and partial skeletons. You can set the items as a stockpile filter, so you could in theory stockpile mechanisms, furniture, blocks, gems, etc with it (as long as it doesn't wear out in water).
Then I discovered that remains disappear eventually in water.
So I have a device to automatically dispose of vermin remains that don't rot in 0.31.

I'm having trouble figuring out exactly how the pressure plate factors in without flooding out the dwarf doing the stockpile.

I suppose the lag from the floodgate opening might do the trick.

That's pretty simple and clever.

Does this mean that fluid dynamics have been changed in the new version?
Pushing around objects with water always used to be *very* unreliable..

Main danger with this is that pets or children following the dwarf might get caught in the flow and washed away with the refuse.  Some time back I designed a somewhat similar device using magma to incinerate refuse, with some complex interlocks using hatches and weight-sensitive pressure plates to exclude anything other than an adult dwarf from entering.

And this is bad because...

Fixed that for you my friend.

But doesn't a grate/bars allow flow, but prevent dorfs from being washed away?

There's a bug wherein water flow will push things (I would imagine painfully) through grates and fortifications.

I believe water flow is unreliable because when water teleports, it doesn't push items or creatures in its path. But when it spreads, it does. This design doesn't have that problem because the water first teleports to fill it to 7/7 (which might not push the item) then it drains using the normal spreading behaviour, which should always move the item.

I think this is more beautiful feature than that your automatic stockpiling itself.
