Rathè the Flying Elf
« on: April 27, 2010, 01:00:47 am »

I read a post somewhere about channels of water in partially frozen seas, so I took an adventurer north to see them.  I didn't find them, but instead found a snaky "crack" of completely blank tiles.  When I alt-move into the crevasse, it says "move to empty space" but when I do the game says I'm "flying".

Your speed is so high that you're defying gravity. You also "Jumped" from the crevice.
Quick, get back onto land before gravity realizes what you're doing.

It's a known bug. For some reason, some frozen tiles are "empty" but still passable.

Gravity cancels slacking off: What you bitches doing?!
You slam into the ground!
You give in to the pain.
Rathè, Flying Elf, has blead to death.

I believe it was because the tile below had a frozen block of water, but no floor topping it.

Actually, "flying" has also been observed for regular water tiles underground mostly singularly, though. But a variation involving an invisible water impassable wall along a rank or file also exists.  They are singularities in the rules of physics, most likely cause would be a world gen or physics loop bounding problem.  I suspect that Toady optimized a lot of the physics code during development to speed things up and this is the result.

There may be a specialized form of the bug specific to ice, but is likely related to the water problem.

Or as another poster put it, it's "full of topless ice walls."
