This is what will happen:

If you let yourself fall for her, you'll get friend-zoned and end up the crying shoulder but nothing else

If you refuse to become emotionally attached, she'll be all over you.

Murphy's law.

As an amoral eldritch abomination, Cthulhu has a surprisingly good grasp on human social situations.

I wonder...

Had some of such acquaintances myself.
It normally ends up for me getting hurt.

It's true about the friend zone stuff. If you're attracted to her then you don't want to start out as her comforter and ear to vent all her problems on. If you do, then soon enough you'll be listening to her boyfriend problems. Seems like a given that you're attracted to her, or else I doubt you would approach this with so much thought.

And yeah if her family is real messed up then be wary for extreme neediness, manipulation and dishonesty. Abusive parents tend to teach that to their children.

Don't let her drag you down.  I've been insane and depressed before.  It turns you into an incredibly cold, callous, and abusive person, cruising for other people's resources and attention.  Now, I'm not saying this particular girl is a nutbag--but watch out.  Desperate people can be cruel.
Hahahahaa. Fun thing: that's me, right now. And I'm happy with it :3
I don't exactly define it as cruel, as long as you only go for what will benefit people the most.'
No, not just me, everyone. and I'm still cold, and abusive ;P

As for the op, dating her is something you'll have to have separately. For now, if you really care:
Care. That is really all.

*Shrug*

Sorry, coldness and abuse simply isn't my thing.  I'd rather have a warm and fuzzy relationship, or not at all.

... Warm and fuzzy and rainbow-puking.  That sort of relationship.

Warm fuzzy and rainbow puking is awesome. As some have yet to learn, life has more than enough pain in store, there's really no need to go creating or harvesting more- it's wasted effort.

As a person who hates most humans I say walk into her parents house naked, get some cereal or whatever you can find and start eating it.
When they see you ask whats for dinner

... How is this helpful and not just a random violation of privacy?
