I decided to see how deep I could dig, so I embarked on a dwarven mountain home. Since the lowest point was inside the fortress I dug there (the walls and floors there were smooth). And any new walls I dig are smooth, why?



EDIT: The walls I dig are smooth but the floors are not.

My guess would be that NPCs don't actually smooth their walls but instead any walls inside the bubble of their fortress are auto-flagged as smoothed. If any new walls you build anywhere are now ending up smoothed then I'd assume it's the same kind of tagging structure like how once you've breached the underground all your interior floors start sprouting deep plants.

Now I discovered that only some of the walls in the cavern I found are smooth, others are just regular cavern walls, and in no particular pattern either.

When samurai have to choose between life and death, he choose death. When dwarf have to choose between safety and something with unknown and potentionally deadly results, choice is similarly obvious.
