I think the problem is your assuming that the combat system is still the old version. Correct me if i'm wrong, but not only do wooden weapons suffer the whole 50% nerf thing, but now they're also not sharp aswell?
I'm not assuming anything, I'm saying it's a marked improvement. Especially since enemies can now both dodge and 'deflect' (which I assume means parry) the falling rocks and swinging blades.

There is no longer, this weapon does 100% damage, this does 50% All damage is found out by edge, weight, elasticity etc.  This makes gold as good as iron for swords, copper titans invincible and adamantine warhammers terrible.

The problem here is that some things aren't simulated correctly, leading to the iron/gold thing. That's the thing about simulationism: You have to make sure the simulation approaches the right conclusions, instead of just supplying the conclusions from the start.

I always imagined stonefall traps as a boulder balanced on top of of a rickety stick that collapses when you touch it.

hmm.
I wonder whether traps are mod-able now as well, what with the custom building stuff implemented.

Some ideas:
noose : req rope (mechanism?). traps critter, but easy to destroy with cutting attack.
good for hunting.
bucket trap : linked to door, filled with liquid X. hilarity ensues. ;)
or more likely acid trap: req. mechanism, barrel of lye/acid. adds contaminant to victim(s)
