[0.31.01] Cooking meat
« on: April 02, 2010, 01:03:40 pm »

I can't seem to cook meat at the kitchen. It doesn't appear on the kitchen menu and will not be chosen when preparing meals. I currently have some horse meat in the barrels, not being used for anything else.

If by Kitchen Menu you mean the one accessed from the [z] screen, then no, meat does not show up there. Dwarves eat meat raw; in previous versions they would also cook it when preparing meals, but that may have changed now that butchering produces much more stuff. I haven't done much cooking yet.

Quarry bush leaves don't show up either.

Dwarven Sugar does.
Dwarven Wheat flour does.
Cookable plants do.

I can't tell if Tallow does because render fat to tallow is listed as automatic in the raws, and I have auto kitchen set in workshop orders, but it isn't creating the job.  Render doesn't show up in the kitchen menu, either. I might change the reaction for this just so I can get it to appear.

From the description of the event, I think that your copy of Dwarf Fortress was on drugs when this happened. That's surely the only logical explanation for a human werewolf with deadly farts dying from it's own excrement after slaughtering some goblins comrades.

Known issue, already mentioned in the big bug thread. This can be fixed by editing your raws to include [EDIBLE_COOKED] tags for the appropriate items. Likely just missed when Toady wrote the raws.

Just for clarification for people who have never edited raws before like me.

You have to edit the raw files in your save folder.
Open "material_template_default.txt"
Then just add [EDIBLE_COOKED] to all the entries that have the [MEAT] tag.

When you next load your game, all the meat, liver, brains, heart, etc that came from your butchers will be cook-able.   :)

...

Thereīs another thing strange with Quarrybush Leaves...
if you do custom foodstockpiles, QUarrybush leaves would usually show up unter "leaves".
Now however instead of  Quarrybush leaves, the  only entry shown for "leaves" is "Rock Nuts".

As Rock Nuts usually are seen as the seed of Quarry Bushs,
in contrast to full grown Quarry Bushes, I  assume that the entry uis faulty
(and might lead to buggy behavior,  althoug I havenīt been able  to test it yet)

I was hoping I would be able to spare my butchers but I suppose there will be a little of Atir Kolorstist in every dwarf of my fort.

Even easier would be to open it, press ctrl H, and replace all [MEAT] with [MEAT][EDIBLE_COOKED].

That way you won't have to manually edit them all.

I only got the "render fat" option on kitchens built after I had fat which needed rendering.

Quarry bush leaves don't show up either.

I suspect editing plants_standard.txt will fix that, too. The leaf gets the [EDIBLE_COOKED] tag. testing now.

I got the, cant-render-fat bug too. I have 9 units of mule fat sitting in my stockpile, but the kitchen wont autorender neither can i manualy order it to do so. The order simply doesnt show up. I was able to order it rendered through the manager, but the job got canceled. 'Needs unrotten glob.' Seems to be related to the pathing bug, the part where dwarves cant access items once in barrels/bins.
Funny thing is, he took the barrel with the fat to  the kitchen and now sits on it spamming errormessages.

Well now talk about funny, after I canceled the order in the managerscreen, he started to make tallow out of the fat. Seems related to the stockpile-accessing-part.
