[0.31.01] No stockpile options for bones and skulls
« on: April 02, 2010, 08:20:22 am »

The refusepile menu doesnt allow for seperate storage of bones, skulls and shells like in the previous version. First I thought they might have been moved to another stockpile, but know I noticed my dwarfs moving my kitten skulls to the outdoor-refusepile. That is a mayor hindrance in my bonebolt production.
Also I noticed that cave lobsters (or any fish/meat for that) dont drop a shell and/or bone if eaten. Dont know if that is a bug or a feature. Maybe they drop them on cleaning. Havent enabled fishing yet.

I've noticed this too, hopefully this isn't on purpose, I really liked collecting skulls and then giving my bone-carver some serious training.

Same. This is a major problem since we can't make underground stockpiles specifically for bones/skulls/shells/other craftable body parts, and they rot away above ground.

I have a pile of 120 vermin corpses that don't seem to be diminishing, but animal corpses do rot, and I've had a rotting elephant lung full my entrane hall with miasma a second ago.

temporary workaround, make an indoor refuse pile accessable via corner only, miasma stays in and bones arent cleared. (Hoping stockpiling issue is solved quickly, my tombs seem empty without the bones of many species littering the floor.)

Bones and skulls fall under the "Body Parts" category of refuse now, which also includes teeth, hooves and everything else you can also make crafts out of. Likely Toady did this so that modded body parts or randomly generated body parts that can get used also fit in. Not sure if only unrottable body parts get collected, but miasma can be contained with corner entrances to stockpile rooms.

Oh and shells come from fish cleaning now, not from eating. There's stopping you from cooking lobsters and turtles anymore.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Use atom smashers to annihilate non-rotting remains, that's the simplest workaround.

So now I have to seperately permit each and every possible kind of shell, with no indication anywhere that I'm permitting shell and not viscera or eyes?

None of my small animal remains are rotting.

Yeah seems improvable.

And the vermin not rotting seems to be because they are mainly chitin or something, with doesnt rot.
Thats caused by the new tissue layers.

Then why aren't my Rat Remains rotting away?

My rat remains are rotting:

Pic is of my waste dump at the bottom of a river, where these have been sitting for about half a season. But according to the 100+ roach/lizard remains, not everything is rotting.

how do you go about placing items under the bridge? it wont let me designate stockpiles there and dumping is equally broken it seems.

I've been dumping through the ceiling and onto the drawbridge landing.
