Arise, my undead minions... wait, you're not undead?
« on: April 03, 2010, 06:34:00 am »

So I've heard about how hard it is to kill the undead critters roaming about, and being that I prefer to wrap my dwarves in about 14 layers of padded leather and pigtail fiber than let them get hurt, I decided that I wanted to use arena mode to check this out.

I'm glad to see I could make, say, a groundhog into a Not Fighter or a Grand Master Fighter... but where's the Not Zombie and Not Skeletal tags?

Anyone see a way to have undeads in their arena?

The same thing applies for bronze collosusses, you can use those to see that non-living stuff can't get hurt.

Well it can get hurt, you can make all organs have red wounds, and sever all limbs, but they won't die no matter what. Someone said that Bronze Colossus can be only killed by melting atm.
I am sure all this is a bug and will be fixed in the bugfix releases.

Someone said that Bronze Colossus can be only killed by melting atm.
But can they still be captured in a cage made of featherwood?

I killed two zombie raccoons! It can be done! 8 casualties from starvation though..

best undermine and drop into cage traps, barring magma.

Try axes, severing might do better.

It didn't work for me. Okay, it was a forest titan and not a colossus, but it was made of metal, refused to die no matter what, and just walked through all of my cage traps.

From what I can see via arena mode testing, the colossi (almost) only die by melting, yes. Magma or sufficiently hot gas -- you'd have to mod that in though, probably -- will eventually kill them. They can still kill a fair number of ridiculously fast, super-hot gas breathing, dwarf-size adamantine colossi before the hoard manages to melt 'em, though.

For most other similar critters (undead, blizzardmen, etc), about the only way I've found that kills them is to get lucky and chop off something important before the thing gets damaged to much to be cut off, which is incredibly nonsensical.

You can one-shot a blizzardman (taking off its lower torso, ferex), but if you set it on fire all its flesh and most its inner-bits will eventually burn off and everything left essentially melt, leaving you with nothing to cut off; you end up with an unkillable -- save cave-in/solidifying lava encasement -- creature. Beating on it for a while will do basically the same thing, unless you manage that lucky sever.

Best chance you've got in fortress mode, I think, is to make sure you've got big-damage (great axe works decently... sometimes) weapons on highly trained dwarves and hope they take the thing down before it hits the critical damage point that renders the buggers unstoppable.

Undead are harder to kill, which is good.

The bronze collosusses is kill-able if you shoot oodles of arrows at it. Took about a billion wooden arrows of elven crafted to take one down in object test arena.

Having made a giantess with maxed skills and a particularly awesome two-handed sword (which they wield with one hand!) in the arena, I can say for sure that BCs can in fact be killed in combat.

But there's only one way to do it, and that's by cutting off the head, Highlander style. Anything else short of melting it with clever traps or a dragon discovering the brilliant tactic of hit&run dragonfire won't even slow it down.

Lol, bronze collosus vs hundreds of dwarves with maxxed out marxman and 100 slade arrows. Over a two dozen pages of stuck-ins. The dwarves ran out of arrows >_>
Send in the ogres with slade warhammers!
