So I eagerly created my first game last night with the new DF. I installed a graphics pack (RantingRodents) and away I went! I mostly just wanted to look at the new menus and fool around, so I just hit "Play Now!" and didn't change anything. Strike the earth!
I look around at my new caravan, and something isn't right. There are no dwarf sprites. Well, okay maybe the graphics pack isn't working perfectly, whatever. Lets start issuing some orders. Oh, I can't. None of my dwarves will let me, and none of them have skills. What the heck, I read that the new version was confusing, but this is completely unfamiliar. Let me take a look at my group in the U screen. What the-
I have seven dwarf names, as usual. I also have a Bat Ray (tame) and an Elf (tame). A tame elf? Apparently the dwarves are taking elven slaves? That is hilarious. Oh wait, no... that isn't right either. Why is it I can prepare my dwarves for slaughter, not give them commands, and they have no skills? And why are they represented as a big "S". Let me take a look:
That's right, scorpions. Giant scorpions.
In the orders screen, instead of things like "Allow dwarves to go outside", I have "Allow Unknown Beasts to go outside". In the Civilizations screen, the top one is called "Unknown Beasts". I have no idea what happened, but apparently in this world you can play as scorpion monsters. I tried to save and it crashed (GRRR!) but reloading it up it was the same. And saving crashed. Going to the embark screen and "Preparing carefully", I could assign my scorpions skills, buy normal dwarven supplies, and for livestock choices I had Cow, Horse, Donkey, Elf, Elf Child, and Centauress." But trying to leave this screen to actually embark resulted in a game crash.
The scorpions themselves can do jobs, but you can't assign them skills or even look at their skills. The elves, however, can be ordered around and given jobs. So I could run a fortress of scorpion overseers and an elven underclass of slaves... if I could get the game to save.
Anyone else encounter anything like this? And how do I look at the history of the world?
