Squad orders: search & destroy
« on: March 27, 2010, 08:14:12 am »

When enabled, the military squad locates the closest enemy and goes to clobber it.

Useful in mountainous regions where the siegers and stragglers are hard to locate and/or you know you are completely overpowering the enemy and just want to give a one-shot command to let loose.

Coming in the now-imminent new version.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Already implemented in the new release.

You can order military dwarves to patrol sections of the map. If there are any hostiles in their section of the map they'll head into trouble on their own.

You can also set them to patrol the entire map if you want to, or just specific regions apparently, allowing you to have a regional military, like gate guards, or an offense military that sweeps the entire map clean.

I think the OP still has merit though, in maps with heavy Z-level fluxuation it can be a pain to get a far off soldier to engage with a quickly climbing hostile.

Thats true, but in the new release you should be able to assign your dwarves to multiple burrows. Thus, you could in theory assign your military dwarves to a burrow that encompasses the entire map.

Which means that they will run around the map to stab things, regardless of where they are on the map. Sure it may take them some time to run from your deepest catacombs to the edge of the map, but thats the tradeoff.

Or you could have two separate military forces. First once guards the surface, second entirely separate one guards the underground, so there are always dwarves nearby to stab things.

Yeah, given that combat and injuries seem to be kinda broken at the moment, there's not much of a point to it.
