Me and Tahin got artifact Iron figurines. Thats fine and dandy, but no iron whatsoever was used in their construction. Mine only used cow leather and tortoise shells, and yet it shows up as an iron figurine with spikes and bands of shells and leather. I had no iron availiable at the time, and I watched the dwarf gather everything, no iron involved.

It only seems to happens to artifact figurines though.

Perhaps related to the bug where all goblets forged out of any material are showing up as iron? Maybe not.

I think I can confirm this. In my second fort I got 3 or 4 iron statues as artefact's and thought that it's a nice coincidence.

But if I think about this further, I had neither iron nor a forge. And all artefact's I got there were made by craftsdwarves in a (the only) craft workshop I got. Somehow I doubt iron statues are now made in these, so it must be an instance of this bug.

Not just iron. I had brass show up as gold.

I also had this show up while making copper trade goods.  I just wanted to add that when I made copper goblets or flasks, they came out as iron with the iron-appropriate item value.  But when I made instruments, toys, or crafts, they came out as copper, with the copper-appropriate value.  I got the same result trying to make different things out of bronze.

Forging iron trade goods seems to work fine.
