No, I think the cook would be in charge of sugar-coating the cows.

You are a lifesaver! Round and probably in tropical flavors.

Try this if you haven't, already:  http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=51957.0

Also, if you have a processor with multiple cores, try setting the affinity for dwarfort.exe to a single CPU, and set explorer.exe, Firefox/IE, and any other big processes to another CPU.

"Monster of  a machine" is not an exact description of a computer. A 1,8Ghz Quadcore and the newest graphics card won't do much for DF performance... also, what version? Fullscreen, window size, graphics sets? how many dwarves? what kind of embark? Any more details?

There are a few options in the init.txt to raise fps. Setting partial print to 2 and lowering the gfps to 20 or 15 helps on most systems. You can also turn of weather and temperature, if you don't need them necessarily. Also playing windowed (not fullscreen) should help.

Yeah I know all that... I tried messing with Gfps, vsync, refreshrate, partial print... nadda...

And I built it from scratch and it cost 3 grand... Core I7, 24 gigs ram, etc.

ohh and as a general note I could run 10x10 embarks last version with 100 dwarves + animals with River at 100+ FPS.... this version 4x4 embark instant 40-90 FPS.

An i7 should definitely do it... very strange indeed. It is known to be a little slower, but not that much. Even my 2,4GHz with 2GB RAM does >100 in the beginning at 4x4.
Did you already try Baughn's DF accelerator? It probably won't bring it back to normal but can help a little. If it is regular freshly downloaded DF, I really don't know what is causing this.
