Square graphics?
« on: April 03, 2010, 11:50:15 am »

I don't mind the ASCII tiles, but having them be 8x12 or whatever is really annoying to me. How can I make the tiles square? I was looking in the init but I can't figure it out.

I use a tileset for exactly that reason. But if you object to tilesets, I dunno what to tell you.

I'd be nice to have a square ASCII tileset.

Try turning GRAPHICS:ON. This has caused crash problems for some people (especially when loading the arena. You can also just copy and paste the default graphics tileset ("curses_square_16x16.bmp") to the font boxes above (in init.txt):

[WINDOWEDX:1280]
[WINDOWEDY:400]
[FONT:curses_square_16x16.bmp]

I find the default font looks pretty bad at higher resolutions, but alas the Wiki's tileset depository seems to be... gone.

Here's the one I use. Just put it into your data/art folder and change to "[FONT:Cooz_curses_square_16x16.bmp]"

Ignore this post. My mistake. I wanted to modify the other one.

EDIT: Ahhhh, squareness. Now I can designate a fort.

There's an option in the init file called "BLACK_SPACE".

What this option did for me previously was add black space to the edges of each ASCII tile in order to make them square shaped.  It looked a lot better in the game, the only downside was having extra space in between letters in the menu and such.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get this to work the same way ever since I installed Windows 7.

It is possible that I had made some other changes in the past to get the square shaped tiles, but I have never downloaded any tilesets, and I was using the standard ASCII graphics.  It looked exactly the same as default, except each tile was square shaped. (The graphics were not "stretched" in any way, there was just black space added on the sides.)

Kinda confusing I know.  :-/  But it's possible to get square tiles and keep the same graphics.  I'll mess around some more and try to figure out what I did before.

Here is a bmp version of the cooz_curses_square tileset that I have been using in 2010
