[0.31.12] Lag when constructing walls, floors and stairs.
« on: December 13, 2010, 05:28:31 am »

Anybody else got this problem?

Whenever I wish to construct basic things such as walls, floors, stairs, there's about a six second delay between when I choose the construction and when I'm offered the placement.  It's so bad that Windows thinks DF has frozen.  While my embark size is nothing enormous (3x3) I have 50 dwarves and about 200 animals, all of which are either caged or in 1x1 rooms.  Also, I have something like 200 Z-levels.

What could be the cause of such a lag?

Do you use the mouse or the keyboard to designate the area?

Keyboard.

The lag happens not when I designate, but when I actually choose the construction type (wall, floor, stairs...)

Ah, it's probably because it's looking through all the available materials for construction. As in, you have too much stuff and the lag is from it compiling it all for use in the construction display menus.

Also 0.31.01?

That version had horrible bugs with pathfinding and item accessability. Might be related.

Because adding terrain to a 1024*1024*100 map takes longer than you think ;3
I'm guessing that the map is a gigantic 3D Array and the buildings/items/creatures/whatever are just objects with coordinates.

Actually, forget what I said. It shouldnt take more time than subtracting two variables.
