Volcanoes 2010?
« on: April 02, 2010, 10:27:50 pm »

Has anyone else noticed the distinct lack of volcanoes in DF2010? even though there is magma at the bottom of every map, that usually requires digging through six or seven pre-populated caves, which is unpleasant at best. Then you have to deal with pumping it to your magma workshops. I tried generating a map with 30-100 volcanism, and it went through 2000(ish) rejections before it said that it couldnt do it.

Anyone else have similar issues?

Do you want a savegame or just the worldgen parameters?

Don't change the volcanism.

There's a different parameter that changes the number of volcanoes.

This one did wonders for me. If you dont like the higher amount of embark points, the default is 1274 or so.

edit: oh, and it's got a higher amount of rivers too.

My first embark with the default worldgen was on a volcano, a volcano made of white sand.

Something curious I did notice is that the magma pipe inside the volcano was the exact same shape for all but the last few layers at the bottom. If that is always the case the old method of digging a fortification 1 tile away from magma and then going up a z-level and hollowing out the remaining tile won't work because you won't have any layers where you can do that. Now that I think about it, even the 2-3 layers that were different at the bottom were always smaller than the layer above so you won't be able to do it there either.

But if there are no creatures within it, there's no need to do this. Just sacrifice a dwarf instead.

Why lose anyone?
I always do it like this and I never lost a single dwarf;

~ magma
| rock
_ floor
d dwarf
Step one(default):
|||||~~
|||||~~

Step two(dug two tunnels):
____|~~
____|~~

Step three(dwarf digs a channel):
___d ~~
____ ~~

Step four:
d___~~~
_~~~~~

The upper tunnel will flood eventually, but dwarf escapes and is free to die pointlessly somewhere else.

There is so damn much of bituminous coal everywhere that I don't need magma anymore...
