Ottem Nom - The Sanctum of Gods
« on: April 01, 2010, 04:22:19 pm »

A long while back, I tried to do this community fortress based on a privileged cult of dwarves who were inherently better than their peers.  The original link is this: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=26207.0

I abandoned it as being too difficult to maintain.  But now, burrows are here.  I'm giving it another shot.

The premise is that the dregs of society will live in their little hovels outside as the cream of dwarfdom live in their grand halls enjoying all the luxury of the world.  The dwarfs outside will cluster together for protection, but otherwise only their numbers and gumption will stand between them and the hostile elements of the world.  This time, I'm making some changes.  First, I suck at building up, so the holy ground of the Few will be below the surface.  If I come into an underground cavern, that's where the servants of the Few will live (those who are allowed access into the high-class areas to do tasks that the Few are too important to stoop to, like cleaning vomit, as well as the royal guard).  The halls of the Few will be subdivided into individual temples to each of their deities.

Any other ideas before I start?

Edit: Hmm, my first possible site is a named mountain jutting out of a flat swamp.  It's 122 z-levels above its surroundings!  Might be a bit much for the computer, though.  Whatever, the new version seems to deal with z-levels more gracefully than the old.

Claimed/reserved dwarfs are listed in green.  Unclaimed are listed in yellow.  Dead dwarves are listed in red.

Holy moly! If nothing else, at least save the save.

There's a lot that can be done with 122 z-levels.

Our time for secret halls and clandestine gatherings will not last forever.  We, who are destined to rule this world, this ‘Dimension of Souls’, will collect our number at a place both holy and mighty.  For we few, we ecstatic few, we are those who are Privileged to hear the voices of the gods—and the gods are angry.  E’en the gods did smile when Boardreign was carved into the Finger of Good mountains, for theirs was a Privileged effort and they knew the designs of the divine.  Yeah, but the gods were filled with ire when that mighty palace of their worship was thrown down by the goblins of the Dungeon of Mazes, led by their unworthy gopher demon, Zas Seducedevil.

And so they speak to us again.  We will go not to the Finger of Good, which are holy in that they lie in the shadow of a divine peak.  We will go straight to the Tower of Scorching to build our faith upon the slopes of the Great Towers itself!  This mountain stands proud and alone, spiking majestically into the sky as a needle to pierce the heavens.  Yes, we will make this place into the image of our faith, for it is holy and mighty.  And, we are the Few.

**Excerpt from the journals of Rovod Justicegates **
The journey was easy.  We, the Privileged Few are not to be harried by the likes of goblin or demon in our holy mission.  And so, we come to the Great Towers of Scorching.  The mountain is incredibly impressive, jutting over 120 dwarfits high.  Clouds gather around the peak, where the gods themselves must live.  We will not disturb them, except to offer pleasing praise from below.  There is a lesser peak that we can use as a suitable entrance to this godly palace.  It faces a sheer wall of the Great Tower.  After a small access bridge is made, the entry hall is constructed in the shape of an oval.  Temporary dormitories and a dining area are established in the corridors leading to the storage rooms.  We Few are not impractically proud, for we are willing to suffer such conditions in each other’s company until more suitable arrangements can be made after the creation of the first shrines.

I was selected to lead the first steps of this mission, because of my skills in dealing with others.  Momuz Mirroreddoctrines is hard at work now that Murgrem Shotkeys has constructed the bridge.  It’s not a good bridge, and I can tell that he’s not happy with it, but he’ll have time later to demonstrate his devotion to űz with a glorious and defensible entrance to the fortress.  For now, we need a fortress to defend.

We’ve brought a great deal of food with us, so we should be able to manage without a farm for some time.  Though it pains me to consider it, we may need to cultivate some of the plants that grow in the swamp before we can relax and consume only the bounty of the deep.  Ast Lancerang, the armorer, also has a good eye for edible plants, so he is scouring the marshes for whatever can be made into a brew.

Though there were a few alligators around when we arrived, by the time summer rolls around, they’ve moved off.  It is delightfully peaceful here, but Murgrem’s occasional shouts of “WAR!” remind us that it will not be so pleasant forever.  We must be sure that our temples are guarded, for until we are well dug-in, these lands belong to the Dungeon of Mazes.

I find it cheers up everyone when I go around bringing them some drink while they work.  It may seem like a menial task, but it is the way of the service of Ilir Peacefulplay.

The first shrine to be dug out is that of Tad Matchfair, the Equivalent Parity.  Completely symmetrical, it is simple and yet its presence has visibly comforted Lumen Plainspaint, our woodcutter and defender if things should go badly.  The Equivalent Parity’s shrine is one of the first things one sees when entering our halls.  We hope that it will put them into a balanced mind.

Disaster!  In an effort to try to shift the entrance bridge over so that the primary bridge may be built, Murgrem failed to check that there was no one ON the bridge before kicking out the keystone!  Alas, poor Oddom Swordtin, we will all miss you.

Our food supply is suddenly in more dire straits now that our farmer and cook has been claimed by the mountain.

Although Oddom worshipped the Town of Furnaces, funeral services will be held at the shrine to the Equivalent Parity.  Oddom will be entombed in the entrance hall, that all who come hence know she was one of the Privileged Few!

Disaster after disaster...

** From the journals of Lumen Plainspaint **

The dregs of society have followed in our footsteps and have stumbled across our most holy abbey.  Even as we begin to cope with the sorrow of having lost one of our number, these creatures come crawling to us.  Since the shrine to the Equivalent Parity has already been sanctified my peers have selected me to be our voice to these lesser dwarves.  These dwarves disrupt the balance of this place, and where the scales are tipped, there will be a reckoning.  I pray that they move on, that the ground around the Great Towers not be stained with the blood of dwarves (even such as these).  We will not have them in our temples, and this land is filled with goblins.

****

I go out to them as they mill about in the swamp, looking for alligators like frightened deer.  With a low but sudden rumble, I surprise them, "Dwarves!  You are not welcome in the halls of the gods.  Your lineages would stain the sanctity of this place.  Begone!  We will not have you."  Obviously, this is not the welcome they expected.  The five of them stare at me, clearly taken aback.

One of them speaks up, a man, probably used to working with fish from the smell of him.  "My lord, we cannot go back.  We haven't the supplies and most of our party was overtaken by goblins on the way here.  We can be useful to--"

"I care not for your troubles."  I have to cut him off, before I'm forced to hear more of his drivel.  "You will not enter our halls.  Whatever else you do, it matters not to me and it matters not to the gods.  We must maintain the balance of this place."  I turn around and stomp off.  There are trees that need to be cut.

The meager dwarves talk amongst themselves for a while and eventually begin to do something, splitting up and working.

Quick suggestion: If any of the Few marry one of the Meager, that dwarf should become one of the Few themself. I think you're already going to do stuff like making lots of the stuff the Few like and being a dick to people the Few dislike.

I'd love to take Wallerdent. Such a fun name, Wallerdent. It's one of the few DF last names that could pass for a real last name, too.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

That was a pretty amazing oversight on Murgrem's part. I'm not even sure how you can demolish a bridge without noticing someone standing on it.
