Items blocking construction sites

Sometimes when there's stone lying around on a construction site my dwarves suspend the construction and wander off, rather than just moving the items off the site. This seems a little lazy on their part and it's very difficult to get them to move specific items to stockpile, so can they start moving the offending items?

Un-suspending the construction ususally helps - somehow they're more likely to move the stone the second time they're told to.

nah... (sometimes) they'll suspend it right away again

my problem isn't the stone.. it's the picks... blocking a door... in a farm connected to the rest of the fortress...

i guess i'll just have to have a bunch of miners picking up all the picks..
