Goblins??? They evaded my traps...
« on: March 28, 2010, 06:51:00 am »

I have a big rectangular wall on the top layer, with a winding 3-wide corridor to allow caravan access. The traps are all in the corridor. Somehow an ambush appeared inside my walls, and killed 8 of my dwarfs including one I cared about. How did this happen? Can they climb walls or something? I had war dogs stationed and they detected kobold thieves before, and prior to this the traps seemed to stop other goblins from coming in.

It could be any number of things. You might have accidentally opened a back way, by mining or construction. The traps could be jammed/empty, though that usually gets fixed quickly. If you have a rectangular map, that can cause enemies to spawn in strange places. You might also have added TRAPAVOID to them.

Apparently having a redundant creature entry causes the game to say, "Oh, look, it's crazy world now. Nothing makes sense! Alligators live in houses!"

Also, invaders (and migrants) have been known to spawn away from the edge on some maps.  Usually (but not always, see: Muckgrotto) rectangular ones.

do invisible goblins even cause traps to go off?

From the description of the event, I think that your copy of Dwarf Fortress was on drugs when this happened. That's surely the only logical explanation for a human werewolf with deadly farts dying from it's own excrement after slaughtering some goblins comrades.

Hi!

do invisible goblins even cause traps to go off?

Yes, they will. But they will not cause the ambush message or uncover the ambush. However, their corpses will be visible.

This can be a nasty surprise if you don't have enough traps/a dwarf who is too close to the traps as dwarves will quickly clean traps that have goblin invaders stuck in them (^_^;;

Umm, my experience is different, as soon as the babysnatchers are caught in my cage traps the game immediately pauses, zooms to the cage trap and says: "Thief! Protect the children!" or something like that, I would guess the same would be true for sieges though I can't remember with 100% certainty if this is so.

Hi!

Actually, your experience is not that different. You see, I don't have a military in my fortresses, so I don't have any use for prisoners. Thus, I don't have cage traps, only weapon traps. Thus, there is no live goblin to be uncovered, only dead goblin parts and maybe a trail of blood leading to the map edge.

A good ambush is one I only know of because my dwarves start quietly hauling new spider silk clothes into my stock piles :) :) :)

Cage traps will reveal ambushes with an announcement - any other traps will just silently kill them.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
