Is this stealing?
« on: March 29, 2010, 06:04:52 am »

I deconstructed my trade depot out from under the traders because I wanted to move it.  All of their stuff exploded out of their wagons and now the game treats it as belonging to me.  Will this count as stealing and will my dwarves get in trouble for it?

I think there is not so much "stealing" in this but the merchants will be pissed because they leave with nothing on them, which means there's a lot of negative profit for them. And that mostly hurts how much they bring you next year.

Holy schist, this thread is mica me sick.
DF Players never truly leave.  They just abandon the fortress for a few years and then reclaim.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Known bug. You're advised not to deconstruct the depot after the traders arrive. They track their wealth entering the map and compare it to their wealth leaving the map. Results showing positive gain result in positive relations, and negative gain will result in hostilities.

It's the dwarven traders, so hostilities isn't a problem...

I quit without saving to before they arrived (I run df from the terminal, and if I close that window it also closes the df window without saving) so it's a moot point now, but --

If I give them their stuff back before they leave at the new depot, will that fix it?

I think the only way to 'fix' it would be to conduct some trades that are profitable for them for the next few times they come by.  Since it is the dwarves you don't have to worry about angering them, so you can work to bring their attitude back up by giving them lots of profit over the next few years.

IIRC, Everything you took from the dwarves will still considered to be "stolen" so you will not be able to trade it back to them unless you convert it to your fortresses created items.  This means by processing (smelt, brew, cook) it or decorating it.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.
