[SPEED:1] disadvantages
« on: March 28, 2010, 02:25:38 pm »

I put all my dwarfs at [SPEED:1] by modding the raws, as I needed them fast to dig out the gigantic mountain halls I plan on digging out.

Now, I just noticed my two fisherdwarfs fished clean my ENTIRE map within a season. They were simply too quick.

Did anybody else have similar stupidities happen to them? (The cave fish were my primary food source.)

Insane leveling of off duty military comes to mind. Hunting would be another problem.

Your FPS will also likely not go much higher than 25, ever (due to increased pathfinding). The dwarves will obviously still move faster in real-time, but the interface will be slowed.

Social skill leveling among your other dwarves as well; [SPEED:1] is a great way to make everyone in your fortress a legendary dwarve (at a social skill)

I can't say I've ever had that happen, having never used [SPEED:1] before, but when it comes to food, I always make sure I've got at least six different farms running at all times, at least two in outdoor greenhouses to take advantage of all possible crops. Basically it's diverse and it's sustainable so I don't have to worry about finding other supplies. (So, if I may say, I recommend in the future ensuring this is set up before going for something like [SPEED:1] so you avoid this unfortunate aspect.)

One planter seems to be all I need to sustain my entire fort. They still eat only as often as normally, but this one can plant/harvest MUCH quicker.

Ah, yes, that would speed things up then. So he only tends one field?

I don't have much of an issue with it. I personally like it. But that's me. You get a lot done, fast.

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

I use [SPEED:0]. Very fast, but a little laggy.

I'm currently making a nice room for my legendary clerk. I always treat my legendaries with the greatest respect, giving them the best rooms and so on. Although the walls are mostly engraved with pictures of my miner starving to death after he fell down a well, so it's not too cheerful.

Depending on the workshop, and the number of haulers you have, your shops can get crazy cluttered VERY fast. I set the speed in one of my forts to 1 to get a few tedious tasks finished in a more timely fashion, and in the meantime, I tasked my butchers with culling my horse herd...the workshop was almost unusably cluttered in about 10 seconds, and I had to put a bunch of rock haulers on hold so as to clear out the globs of fat and skulls and skin that had suddenly filled up the kitchen area.
