Can't remember a book - about time travel, giant 2001ASO-style obelisk

Okay, so there's this book, and this guy wants to go to a giant black stone obelisk, a tall rectangular prism. It's like in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The thing is, as he gets nearer and nearer, time slows down for him. The one thing I remember clearly is that as he got very close, he could see the sun and moon whirling and whirling over the landscape. Someone said it was Marco's Millions, but I don't think so - I don't remember a swing. What do you guys think?
