As an experiment once I attempted to set up a series of pumps on the walls of my rivers drain to pump the water out as it was falling.  It worked OK, but I decided I would rather just dam the river with a bridge so I set all the pumps to be deconstructed.  What I didn't consider when setting the pumps to be dismantled was the volume of water on the other side of the pumps.  So as my dwarves started taking the pumps apart they would get washed down the tube.  Then the dwarves who wanted to store the pump parts in the stockpiles came in and got washed away as well.  2/3 of my forts population got washed down that drain before I realised what was happening.  Needless to say a tantrum spiral quickly ensued causing the fall of the fort.
