40d# Automatic optimization
« on: March 26, 2010, 01:30:48 pm »

So people need to fiddle around with init.txt for 40d# to work properly.  What if we have a program that fiddles it for us and automatically sets it to the correct values that maximize framerate?

The problem is that some value do give you a very high framerate, with the tradeoff that the display is absolutely broken (flickers, or simply not draw anything).
And of course, the system does not know whehter the display is valid (why do you think everytime you change resolution, Windows ask you if you think it looks fine?  That's because Windows itself does not know if it's displaying it correctly for you).

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

Then a series of tests could be coded that all have a variety of settings, along with a yes/no question on each of "does this display look okay?"  You could access starting the chain from the options menu in-game.

It wouldn't be perfectly automatic, but it would be a lot more convenient.
