When my computer has been ticking over all day, I've laid heaps of stuff out (semi-fractal bedrooms, patrol routes for millitary in expanding length depending on skill (which translates roughly to speed), etc) then my wife reboots the pc. Or logs me out. Or something.

Yea, use dirt roads to clear off the mud.

When I screw up my layout in a way that really irks me, usually involving irrigation/water/fucking rivers in some way.

Or when I have about 100 dwarfs, none are idle, and nothing is getting done :|

When I realize my mega project that will take a RL year was started so close to the new version coming out...

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

Other: Partway through my current project I get an awesome idea that I can't do on the current map. I have a string of these unfinished forts, with the last being 'Oh man I got a great idea but I should wait for the next version; those custom workshops are going to be badassssssss'.

There is an engraving of three dwarves in a dining room. The third dwarf is a soaper.

Yeah, I've had a bit of "wait for the next version" since August.

Knowing that there's no release date, I simply don't wait and play with what I have :P And since my megaprojects aren't that 'mega', I'm sure that I would die of heart attack when new version will pop up while I'm in middle of making a pyramid or something.

I usually get bored because the FPS gets too low.

Equal parts boredom, FPS, and perceived success and "victory", especially in the later game. Earlier on, I'll abandon because my layout was crap, my starting resources were lacking, or any of half-a-dozen other quibbles that prevent this fortress from being absolute perfection, though I'll usually go back to an earlier save and try again rather than start an entirely new fortress.

That's why the most hardcore players are perpetually single.

It has nothing to do with weight, hygiene or social status.

i dont really "abandon" my fort per-say.......if i get too bored i just cause a catastrophic event to obliterate the entire map. (unless i plan on reclaiming)
