I just built a talc+wood screw pump over warm solid rock, and it burst into flames the instant a peasant started turning the crank.

Edit: The talc block was safely recovered.
Edit: Actually, chances are this was caused by terrible terrible design causing lava to flow back onto the pump.  :-\

Sweet, thanks for the input.  Looks like we are getting somewhat closer to understanding the parameters for exploding wooden pumps.
