The mysteries of String dump
« on: March 02, 2010, 03:25:33 pm »

I just read a bit through the wiki again and stumbled upon the String dump page lately.
Some parts of it are extremely mysterious and I have no idea where they could be used. For example:
Quote from: String dump
Only the barest fragments of this amazing story have been uncovered.  It is one of the great untold tales of our times.
Its nature is still an intriguing puzzle to the learned.
It is still shrouded in mystery.
Many facts are still unclear to historians.
A few issues still trouble scholars, but the picture is fairly clear.
I recently read that the Legends mode says about the obligatory Dwarf-Goblin war that scholars are still confused or something like that. But I've never seen these quoted messages.

ITT: Ideas and/or more mysteries about DF.

that's precisely it. I've seen all of those.

Okay, this sounds like something out of a ThreeToe story. What the hell is this?

Also, there's crucifixion. :D

Edit: It seems to me I've found some remains of quasi-magic artifacts in Dwarf Fortress.
Quote from: String dump
The item sparkles with a supernatural brillance.
The air around the object seems warped as if it were very hot, yet the item is cool to the touch.
The object looks oddly square.
The item constantly emits a nearly inaudible high-pitched whistle.
The item is covered with small bumps.
The item smells like wet earth.
Tiny streaks of lightning streak quickly over the object's surface.
Creatures that look at the item cannot think negative thoughts.
The item is covered with minute gray hairs.
The item sounds like rustling leaves when moved.
THIS

AWESOME!
I remember something like that from the last DF talk where Toady said that there once was something like that in DF, but it never made it into an official release.

Those sound like they're used by ABUSE_BODIES civs (the only of which in vanilla are goblins) - I've seen some of those but not all. You can see this sort of thing happen if you attack a goblin site with an adventurer and get killed, or in war records.

The gremlin strings still exist (The relating token is [MISCHIEVIOUS]) in 40d, although unused:
Quote from: String dump
Something has pulled a lever!
Something has triggered a pressure plate!
Something has emptied a cage!
Something has unchained a creature!
Reading the String dump is extremely entertaining. ;D

Edit: Has anyone ever seen those lines when speaking with an NPC?
Quote from: String dump
It is a place of great evil.
looks around nervously and leans forward, speaking quietly.
It is rumored that the dead rise and stalk the living!
Especially the second line is interesting, describing what the NPC does. The next ones are just plain funny.
Quote from: String dump
Capital of what?
This is all there is.
There's absolutely nothing interesting around here.

I've never had this one happen, but kill-stealers when questing in Adventure Mode seem to be acknowledged by the game.
Quote from: String dump
It looks like somebody got there first.  In any case, thank you for your dedication.

Edit2: Thorns? What the hell? This is in the part with all the combat descriptions. I have no idea which creature uses this attack.
Quote from: String dump
Many large thorns grow from the

Also, the game seems to differentiate between lava and magma.

The bits of text quoted in the first post only show up when you don't have all world history revealed by default, and they related to how much you haven't found out about the subject in question

Yeah, they're not common though, I think. There has to be an evil area fairly close by for them to talk about. Those might differentiate between the various stages of "evil" as well... since not all of them have undead.
On the second line, he also says the name of the creature that terrifies him after leaning in.

Is mischievious really unused?  I thought the issue was just that gremlins are so rare and localized that they rarely if ever came into contact with anything they could get mischievous on.

I'm pretty sure it does even if you just [k] over it. Try it out next time you have an exposed pipe.

Yea lava is aboveground, magma when the tile it's in is subterranean.  I heard rumors that magma has a higher temperature than lava, but take that with a grain of salt.

I've seen that one in adventure mode.  It isn't very common since you need an evil biome near a site.  Since humans, dwarves, and elves won't live in an evil biome they tend not be close enough to talk about them.

Those are AI node types.
Sieger Basepoint is where they spawn.
Sieger Mill is where they stand before they attack.
Marauder Mill is the same but for marauders, obviously.
Insane Mood is the nodetype assigned to any moody movements.
Undead Hunt is currently unused.

Aha. I was wondering if it meant an altogether more sinister meaning of mill, but that makes much more sense.
