A tale of dwarven determination
« on: March 07, 2010, 12:16:33 pm »

I just saw this on History Channels Secret Passages show, there was this guy who had gotten the famous 'California Gold Fever' but instead of digging for gold, he decided to dig a tunnel through the mountain to the town of Mojave. He started in 1906 and worked for 38 years. WWI came and went, the stock market crash, the depression, and then WWII started, yet he never stopped until he broke through, he was 68 when he finished.

When I saw the program, I immediately thought of how dwarven that was as he was determined as hell to get it done, and he did it all alone!

Couple of sites:

http://www.burroschmidttunnel.org/

The History Channel doesn't have a site page for the show I mentioned.

quite impressive, of course, a single dwarf can do it in about 2 days. but it is impressive for human construction.
although much of the information on the site is so vague that I cannot figure out whether or not to take all of it for face value, I mean the tunnel is obviously there, and the fact that it was dug by a single man is also apparent, but still....

Its not real well known because he had kept it a secret for so long and the town of Mojave is out in the mountains and the desert.

They tore down his old cabin and left it open to vandals...a few more years and that tunnel may be adulterated beyond recognition...
