The underground farming areas are built in a soil layer, so there's nothing strange about those. The farms in the industry towers were made by bucket brigade, tile by tile.

Also, be prepared to work for a while, I'v been working on Silverwaters for about half a year now. 21 000+ blocks don't build themselves you know :P

Anyway, good luck with the fortress!

Now that I think about it...wouldn't it be cooler to make it out of bauxite and the sea be magma...?

Yes, it would be cool. Impossible, but cool.

Still, water and glass has one advantage:

Throwing invaders into the lake so dwarves inside Dwarfture can watch them drown.

While flooding the valley with magma would be the awesome dwarfy thing to do, I only embarked with 20 Bauxite blocks for the finer details of the magma-core plumbing. I'd need upwards of five times that for the many airlocks I will have in place.

Water will have to do, unfortunately.

That'll do...and guess what...?
Apparently I'm making a bioshock-dwarf mod! Its not that far along, though, but it will be out soon enough.

You probably would have been better off with bauxite *rocks*, not blocks; the noyl use for bauxite blocks in a magma-related application is in a pump. Rocks, however, can be made into floodgates and mechanisms.
