393 dwarves have a tendency to slow things down.  If they're all doing something, it's around 3-4 but can get up to 15-20 range when 200+ of them are idle.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

..on my 1.3 gHz lappy, which is also stuck with windows vista, around... 40-80 fps with approximately 85 dwarves (my tinkered pop limit), no weather, no temperature. Apparently if I use no invasions, I had around 100 fps before that, on a map with an exposed magma pipe and a brook, and a set of mountaineous terrain that goes up at least 15 z levels.

On a normal embark I can get around 400-500 fps at embark.  My current for has around 75 dwarves and I get anywhere from 30-60 fps, depending on what tasks are being done.  Though its an improvement of epic proportions over my 5fps on my old laptop, which I played on for 6 months before getting my new laptop.

Seems to be around 20-30 most of the time. Gives me time to react to stuff, I guess.

In my current 37-year fort in 40d9, I'm getting 5-15 FPS with 180 dwarves and a 100 z-level mountain with a fair bit of crap in it.

I only get 2 FPS in 40d18.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.
