what is this disaster???

ok.. ill tell you..

one whole year ago.. the ice froze in my brook, being a good little industrious dorf-god i dammed the brook, and it started to draain..

it drained in spring to 5-6/7 water, and then it drains in summer to 4-5/7 water, and it drained in fall to 2-3/7 water, but it froze in winter, i was going to mine it, but my dwarves were busy making a nice dining hall (really nice) so comes early spring  some of the water melts... i look all 6/7 and 7/7 water....

The water didn't freeze, it just went into winter hibernation.

Quote from: Dwarf Fortress Wiki
A tile of water with a depth of 1 will freeze to create an ice floor. A water tile with a depth of 2 or more will freeze into an ice wall and will additionally create an ice floor one Z-level above it. The ice wall will be the same no matter how deep the water is. As there is no thin ice, the floor can be walked on freely. Ice walls can be mined like any other natural wall. The ice wall will melt into water of depth 7.

This page. Although technically, this is for 40d, but the same rule should still apply for DF2010.

Ever wonder why rivers are infinite? when they freeze higher up in the mountains the 2-6/7 areas become 7/7.

water reproduction. see, they have to become solid to make water babies.

you think you've got it bad :3

I'm under a river that freezes. it helps that it's frozen about 3/4 the year though.
